Review
The unreliable narrator and the fictional memoir are long-standing literary traditions. Nineteenth-century Brazilian author Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis uses both to brilliant effect in his novel Dom Casmurro. Narrated by Bento Santiago, this memoir looks back over a life filled with the suspicion of betrayal Bento is convinced that his wife had an affair with his best friend, and that his son was the result of it. Though he has no real evidence to support this belief, Bento becomes so obsessed with it that, in the end, he commits crimes far worse than the suspected adultery to avenge himself. The memoir itself is a kind of justification for his actions; Bento, now alone, recreates the environment of his childhood and attempts to rewrite the facts of his life--in essence, reconstructing the past.
Among readers familiar with Latin American literature, Machado is considered a master. His novels blend black comedy with deadly accurate social commentary and an unerring perception of human psychology to create works that are brilliant, complex without being opaque, and joys to read. The Oxford University Press edition is ably translated by John Gledson and accompanied by critical essays that will help orient readers unfamiliar with Machado's work.

It's the simplest of stories boy falls in love with girl next door, they grow up, marry and have a child. Enter jealousy, exit happiness and boy/narrator, Betinho, who goes on to write his magnum opus, the History of the Suburbs . However, Betinho has been promised since conception to the priesthood, a glitch that allows de Assis to describe a community so familiar with God that bargaining with Him is as common as haggling with the butcher. This upper- middle-class Brazilian society of the last century ( Dom Casmurro was first published in 1899) is the setting for Betinho's transformation from a coddled only child to the middle-aged Dom Casmurro, or Lord Taciturn. It is marked by his fantastic imagination, both comic (as when he consults with maggots who are eating books he needs for a dissertation) and tragic (evidence of his beloved wife's infidelity is circumstantial at best). Deftly translated, Dom Casmurro is a book full of humor, sweetness and a tender melancholy--a book that deserves to be read.

I read Dom Casmurro, by Machado de Assis, while living in Brazil, and also became aware of a variety of opinions about it, as it was mentioned often in the culture paqes of my Brazilian newspaper. I also read most of the rest of the corpus of Machado's novels. This is probably the greatest novel by one of the world's greatest authors.

I read the book in Portuguese and bought this translation to give as a present.

This author is good at keeping the reader guessing. What stands out is the author's treatment of the narrator, who is a prime example of what is called an "unreliable narrator." The narrator is clearly a jerk, a hidebound old man, who has always been a person of what a Brazilian might call "few lights," but as he tells the story the reader is also aware of the author, the "old wizard," who is laughing at Casmurro the whole time. Critics might disagree with me, but I think the "old wizard" himself is posing as the old wizard, quite self-consciously. The hidebound old man is, of course, a representative of the hidebound old social class which was running the country. Social climbers like Casmurro's wife or (in another novel) Helena are better people in Machado's opinion. But see for yourself, and don't miss this novel!
A pleasure to read. It's a most unusual novel and a satisfying page turner. I'm so glad it is still in print.
One masterpiece by one of the top two or three (In only can think about Eça and Camilo at the same level) greatest writers ever in the Portuguese language. Ironic, simple to read, caustic, and engaging. No one writes like Machado.
This classic Brazilian novel, written by Machado de Assis and first published in 1899, is available in the U.S. in a new edition published last year by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. In this first-person narrative, an elderly Bento Santiago reminisces about his happy childhood, including his devoted mother and his enduring love for his childhood sweetheart, Capitú. Over time, Bento's adolescent happiness matures into a complicated adult life, rife with drama and tragedy.

As Bento progresses through his life story, his easygoing and often humorous voice adopts a deceptively light tone. This misleading lightness masks a much darker story, one of a man regretful of destroying his happiness with his own crippling jealousy. Not only is Bento the master of his own tragedy, but he also revels in telling the story to us, complete with dramatic flourishes and strategic asides. With strong parallels to Shakespeare's Othello, Dom Casmurro is a classic story of love won and then lost. Although over a century old, this fresh and modern story remains as relevant today as when it was first written.
One of the greatest classics of the Portuguese language literature, hands down a must read. I'm not going to go into the work itself, it has been out there for over one hundred years. I'm going to focus on the digital edition, that is great, very well formated. I noticed a few glitches, like what looks like the page numbers of a book it might have been scanned from, but overall it is fine. Kudos to the editing crew.
A beautiful piece of Brazilian literature - it really makes you feel like you are living in Rio 200 years ago!
